So, America, was the trade-in of all our outsourced jobs in exchange for cheap consumer goods worth it?

February 28, 2010 - 5:43 pm 10 Comments

I guess the answer depends on whether you’re the insanely rich CEO of a corporation that outsources jobs and underpays employees.

Of course it’s not only cheap consumer goods that we’re getting in return. It’s a lot more insidious than that. Typing, accounting, research and design, technical-support call centers… This is the best one: "New Jersey legislators acted after the state outsourced the electronic administration of welfare and food stamp benefits to a company that then sent the jobs to India. When New Jersey citizens called to ask about benefits, they were connected with Indian workers who gave Americanized names." http://www.aflcio.org/aboutus/thisistheaflcio/publications/magazine/0903_amjobs.cfm

In other words, it’s not just a matter of reading labels and buying American. To be fair, I might be a little sensitive on the subject. My job was cut about a year ago, so I’ve been working without benefits since then, at a rate of pay that’s competitive with the offshore job market that replaced me. It’s a pretty good deal for the CEO of my company, of course. He was one of the top three top-paid execs in the U.S. last year.

Can you get fair trade products in the big supermarkets in the USA?

February 18, 2010 - 3:37 pm 2 Comments

(for once… this is not whether the USA does fair trade or not… it is about whether you can or can´t find fair trade products in the supermarkets. A "no", or "yes" and where would do. A bit more details that can help a consumer who wants to be responsible would be appreciated)

sure its possible….takes a while longer thought o find it all. Sadly its not all grouped together.

Two choices, cap and trade vs. individual tax credits to ‘go ‘green’. which would be the most effective?

February 16, 2010 - 3:38 pm 16 Comments

Are you for cap and trade? giving billions to limited big corporations to develop new technology. (till the government dollar runs out).
vs. Individual tax credits to homeowners and businesses?
A rush of new buyers looking to ‘go green’, would this spur businesses (especially small mom & pop start-ups) to be innovative and create new technology? at a far less consumer cost?

Cap-and-trade gives pollution reductions a value in the marketplace, the system prompts technological and process innovations that reduce pollution down to or beyond required levels. This point is not theoretical; experience has shown these results. An active cap-and-trade market enables those who can reduce pollution cheaply to earn a return on their pollution reduction investment by selling extra allowances. It enables those who can’t reduce pollution as cheaply to purchase allowances at a lower cost than the cost of reducing their own emissions. It enables all participants to meet the total emissions cap cost-effectively. And it gives all emitters incentives to innovate to find the least-cost solutions for total pollution control.

If corporations are levied fines and taxes as it is proposed in cap n trade, will the corp just eat the loss?

February 14, 2010 - 5:32 pm 10 Comments

and risk shareholders bailing? Or will the consumer eat the loss and ultimately pay more for said product?

What is the economically logical answer to this?

If they want to overprice their products out of the market…maybe…but the idea here is to get them to pollute less, not pay more so they can pollute more and pass the cost onto the consumer.

Do you think Congress should pass the Cap and Trade Bill?

January 16, 2010 - 4:12 pm 18 Comments

Congress is considering legislation to address global warming that would include a cap-and-trade system requiring companies to purchase pollution permits, which could then be resold if they reduce their emissions. Supporters say the system would help reduce greenhouse gases, while opponents say it would put an unfair burden on businesses.
Of course the businesses would pass that to the consumer.

Remember Pres. Obama said under this everyone’s electricity would skyrocket, so why??

To be clear, I personally find Obama to be an arrogant, shameless, and empty-suited politician who is corrupt, lying, and willing to throw anyone aside should they get in the way of his quest. He’s used the black community where it suited him, panders to any group for a vote, and claims credit for the work of others. Further, he’s never done anything for himself and is quick to blame others when criticized. I am especially troubled by his cult following and his paid a legion of foul mouthed morons who propagandize for him and respond to every criticism with derogatory, racist, and sexist rants. Finally, Obama’s cries of racism increasingly fall on deaf ears because he’s been the one using it to corner every advantage.

US top trade groups already demand an end to speculation, but why Congress not act and Media not report ?

December 20, 2009 - 5:01 am 1 Comment

"Leading energy experts across the country agree that recent, unprecedented jumps in crude oil prices are due, in large measure, to rampant speculation in the energy commodities markets.”

“19 of the nation’s top trade associations, consumer groups and labor organizations, the coalition urges “immediate reform in the widely-speculative energy commodity futures markets.”

http://energy.senate.gov/public/index.cfm?FuseAction=PressReleases.Detail&PressRelease_Id=a0267544-59b1-4cd7-b41e-8f0e55738999

Because speculations on the future price of oil does not actually affect the real price of oil that physically changes hands. Its just something politicians talk about to make their constituents think that they are doing to something about the high price of oil. Oil prices are affected by real supply and real demand, same as they always have. Don’t believe the hype.
